Wrapping the Camp John Hay Forest Safe: Forming a Maguey Greenbelt Along the Trail
John Hay Management Corporation, together with more than 50 Baguio volunteers from Team Malaya and the Don’t Stop Running Community, gathered to plant approximately 750 maguey plants and saplings along a 500-meter stretch at the Camp John Hay trail.
The maguey plants were propagated at the JHMC nursery and carefully transplanted to form a greenbelt, a living barrier designed to protect the area from fire and erosion. With their high water content and ability to absorb heat, maguey plants are naturally resistant to burning. Perfectly act as firebreaks, helping slow the spread of flames and safeguard the ecosystem.
This is JHMC’s direct response to the forest fire that affected the area last year. Beyond fire protection, maguey also helps stabilize slopes and prevent soil erosion, making it a vital ally in preserving the integrity of thick Benguet pines at the trail.
